Brainpower Magazine

Brainpower Magazine is meant to be the marraige of modern medicine and technology. It's a spin on publications like Wired, with strong influence from my own interest in the tech leading the health industry.

About the Project

My magazine is a cross between the medical sciences and technology. In it I argue that healthcare is one of the driving factors for tech advancements, and vice versa. The demand for more personalized treatments incentivizes companies to innovate with whatever is available. More sophisticated hardware and software makes those treatments possible. The two are inseparable and I felt a magazine would be the right medium to show that.

Week 1: Secondary Spreads

The assignment began with designing the secondary spreads for one of the featured articles. This article in particular covers the difficulty of treatment when information or nuance is lost in translation. In these early iterations, I looked at different treatments of pull quotes and how I would treat imagery and typesetting.

Week 2: Openers

The following week I got to design the opening pages for articles, and another opportunity to explore my primary layout. Here I'm still experimenting with typographic hierarchy and how vector graphics might serve the titles.

Week 3: Full Feature Article

Here is the first instance of a full article, including the opener, is displayed. I chose an article covering the HoloLense, a Microsoft AR headset that is already seeing use in medicine. The opening image is NOT my own and I later created my own vectored play on it.

Week 4: Final Product

The final deliverable included a primary and secondary cover, introductory content pages, two full articles, and a feedback page.
